On the Occurrence of the Strong Gusty Cross-Wind at Kaohsiung International Airport

Abstract

　　Based upon the 1878 weather observations in occurring the strong gusty crosswind at Kaohsiung International Airport, a study has been proceeded by using weather records from 1969 to 1975. It revealed that 568 cases out of 920 strong south gusts and 792 cases out of 958 strong north gusts could not be interpreted by experience under the common circumstances with the pressure gradient, standard weather type, the local effect etc., In considering the orographic influence, the nature of air mass, the low layer atmospheric circulation over the southern Taiwan and some physical properties of gust, two schematic features of the strong gust occurrence over Kaohsiung area had been given in summer and winter respectively, and some available prediction reference also defined in this paper. Evaluating most of the examples in CAA meteorological center in the recent two years, the results showed to be suceesful.
