On the Measure of Stromy Rainfall by the Radar Set WSR-74C in Taiwan Area
Ko-Kung Chu
Abstract

The precipitation cloud data which were detected by the WSR-74C meteorological radar at CCK from January to October 1978 and the hourly rainfall data in Taiwan of the same period were analyzed in order to find the possibility of detection of heavy precipitation rate by rader. Clouds which covered larger area and there were one or two more vertical developing clouds or cell clouds within it had been a good indication of higher mean rainfall rate and another auxiliary indications might be the averaged cloud top above 16,000 ft, maximum cloud top above 30,000 ft and the difference between them above 16,000 ft. The cloud top above 21,000 ft indicated that there might be rain shower or thunderstorm but there would not be higher mean rainfall rate over a larger area necessarily. More cell clouds occurred in the period of April to September and the local maximum rainfall rate occurred in the area under the cell cloud or in the vicinity of it To measure the precipitation rate of single ceil cloud or the clouds of small area by using the DVIP and the gain reduction procedure of the radar was not a easy work to do and it was not easy to evaluate either. For larger precipitation clouds the rainfall rate of level 2 which was indicated by DVIP seemed to be better statistically than which was given by level 3. If it was analyzed by using the contours of precipitation cloud, the result of level 3 would be much improved.
The peculiar rainfall rate distribution caused by the topography in Taiwan may overcome the detection ability of the meteorological radar which can only measure more effectively under the normal situation. It is hoped that study of measuring the topographical precipitation rate by using the meteorological radar be continued
