It is concluded that a trough will intensify when it passes through the eastern slope of Tibetan Plateau. In winter, the 500 mb contours near a trough could decrease 90 meters in a day by the effect of terrain. With troughs moving northward and weekening in summer, the terrain effect is also weakening. Topography affects the strength of a trough but not its movement. A trough in developing stage moves faster in a equivalent barotropic model, with or without mountains (~29 m sec-1), than in the real atmosphere (~23 m sec-1). However, the equivalent barotropic models could predict the movement of a developed trough quite well.

[1536,1535
post-29460","doc_journal","type-doc_journal","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","doc_categories-jas-1974-1985","doc_categories-jas
["GET
